‘Water Matters Booklet’ – Have your say!

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) was adopted in 2000; it requires governments to take a new approach to managing all their waters: rivers, lakes, groundwater, estuaries and coastal waters. Member States must ensure that their waters achieve at least good status by 2015 and that status doesn’t deteriorate in any waters. To achieve good status and preserve our best waters, it will be necessary to prepare and implement management plans for our waters. While work on the Directive requires a considerable amount of technical expertise, it also requires the knowledge, understanding and views of people who use water in their everyday lives, whether they're drinking it, fishing in it, feeding cattle with it, swimming in it, using it in manufacturing or power generation or even just walking the dog beside it.

You are now invited to give your views on the next step of the implementation of the ‘Water Framework Directive’. On June 22nd, each of the eight River Basin District’s in Ireland published a very informative ‘Water Matters Booklet’ containing what has been considered to be the most important water-related issues affecting water quality today. The booklets say what the Directive requires us to do and how we are working together to implement it on the island of Ireland. It summarises the main issues identified to date and outlines proposals for dealing with them. In short, each booklet sets out:

• background information showing the extent of each issue and the way that it can cause water problems
• a summary of existing controls and an assessment of their adequacy
• the proposed actions, the parties responsible for taking those actions and the users who would be affected.

The views of the general public and in this case, the angling public on whether the most important issues have been identified; whether any significant issues have been overlooked and what you think about the proposed actions, is now needed.

In order to help you avail of this opportunity, we have listed a link to each PDF file for each of the eight River Basin Districts. We have also listed a contact email, so that you may easily forward your views. Please forward your views to the email addresses provided, before the 22nd December 2007.

Thank you webmaster.

As the heading above states - 'Have your say'. The 'Water Matters' booklets are extremely interesting and give the reader a good overview of what is currently happening in relation to the Directive on a district by district basis. There are of course similiar issues that are mirrored throughout the districts. The booklet itself contains the facts that the first 'river basin district management plan' in each region will consider in the compilation of the plan. The water Framework Directive itself places high importance on public consultation and the views of all stakeholders. This is an important chance for you as an angler. Please take the chance. You have untill December 22nd to submit views. Please bring it to the attention of your club members also. Mention will be made in the next affiliated club letter.

Cut and paste the following link to your browser and hover your cursor over the region that you live in to find out which 'River Basin District' applies to you.

For readers from England and Wales, the Environemnt Agency should also be in the process of producing a similiar type of document.
