Location
Take the N4 from Roosky towards Carrick on Shannon, after passing
Gortinty Lake turn off to Drumsna, go over the bridge and take the first
turning left, pass over the canal bridge and take the left turn where
the road forks, just up the hill take the next left turn, this road crosses
a stream that joins the two lakes, park on the verge, just below the bridge
Cartron is on your left and Lowfield is one hundred yards on the right.
Overview
Cartron Lake has not been developed but if you are prepared to
do a bit of reed clearance then walk half way up the left hand side, the
reed beds don't extend too far out at this point, if you're lucky you
may even find a couple of old pallets, this lake is for those of us who
take out Tench fishing serious, a couple of hours spent making a peg and
a couple of evenings ground baiting could result in you catching some
very big Tench, even if they don't show you should still finish up with
a net of Bream.
Lowfield is located over the stile by the bridge, follow the stream to
the lake, one large platform has been erected here which will accommodate
three anglers. Although the lake contains big Tench and Bream they are
rarely caught in this area, you should catch small Roach, Skimmers and
Hybrids. Depths vary between seven and ten feet, anyone with a light boat
should row over to the small island on the left, in the Summer this island
is connected by reeds to the bank, if the water levels are low it is possible
to wade out to it, this is a very good area for the Bream and Tench!
Methods
Waggler or Feeder, if fishing from the platform use fourteens
or sixteen's, if you manage to get anywhere else step up to bigger
hooks and baits.
Hook Baits
All the usual baits.
