Overview
Cloonbonigh
is one of the most popular lakes in the area,
unfortunately the platform was destroyed in the floods this year, we
have asked the Fisheries Board to replace it and will report back asap.
Species
Most species are to be found in this lake including lots of hybrids,
there are a lot of pike averaging about eight pounds but there are also
a few large ones. The Tench average around three pounds and there are
plenty of them.
Location
From Dromod take the road to Mohill, after about two miles you
will come to Cloonbonigh Lake on the left hand side of the road, there
is ample parking in the lay by.
The Swims
There is a steep, and sometimes slippery, bank to walk down to
get to the lake, the distance is a matter of a few feet but, never the
less, not easy if you are carrying a lot of gear or not to steady on your
feet. There is a steady inclined path down to the lake which was constructed
beautifully last year, unfortunately there is a farm gate at the bottom
which is permanently locked!.. Perhaps something may be done about this
for the coming season as Cloonbonigh is a most suitable venue for our
disabled friends but for the present it is not accessible. There are at
least twenty good swims along the bank , average depth in the summer is
around three to four feet, the lake is heavily silted so please do not
wade out!!!
The Method
It pays to fish hard against the weed bed which is clearly visible
and around thirty yards out from the bank, feeder is the most popular
method from the bank, as the weed bed is only two rod lengths out.
All of the most common baits are used and include, Maggots, Worm, Corn
etc, Bread is also a useful addition to your tackle box! As with most
of our lakes eels can be a problem at certain times. As this lake is popular
during the angling tourism season it is advisable to get to this venue
very early to avoid disappointment..
Summary
Cloonbonigh is an excellent lake, offering good sport and comfortable
banks, it is an ideal venue for the family, so take the picnic basket
and enjoy the surroundings.
