There are three main fisheries
at Drumsna which I shall call fisheries 1-2-3.
Location.
From
Roosky the N4 towards Carrick on Shannon, turn left at the Drumsna turn
off and proceed to the river, you have a choice of the three venues in
this major spawning area of the river.
No. 1 Fishery.
Turn left just before the bridge, this short road leads directly
to a car parking area behind the quay, downstream of the quay is a short
stretch of bank which will accommodate three or four anglers, the river
here has a fairly fast flow considering it has such depth.
No. 2 Fishery.
Park in the main street by the bridge and walk down by the right
hand side of the bridge, you will see a small picnic area at the waters
edge, fishing is from here to anywhere up this bank for a distance of
three quarters of a mile. The river is fairly shallow, no more than two
or three feet deep with two exceptions. If you go into the first upstream
field you will find four pegs in between some trees, these pegs are on
the inside of a bend therefore the current is somewhat slower, the depths
vary between four and six feet. The flow, from the middle to the far bank,
is very fast, therefore fish under your rod top. These pegs have produced
some really great Bream catches over the years, the larger of which have
been made very early in the morning or late evening, if the Bream don't
show you should still have a good net of Roach and Hybrids. For those
of you with good legs (and a strong back) take a walk upstream to where
the river takes a sharp turn to the right, this is where the shallows
start from. Just over the stile is a short bank that will accommodate
two anglers, it is eight to nine feet deep here, there is also a reed
bed with four pegs, fourteen to sixteen feet deep, This is a very good
Bream area but, because so few anglers venture this far up river, pre-baiting
will have to be considered.
No. 3 Fishery.
Cross the bridge and go through the gate on the left hand side,
there is room to park two cars on the grass verge but please do not park
in front of the gate.
Fishing is from the bridge to a point opposite the quay, the river is,
again, only two to three feet deep here until it reaches the end of the
trees, from then on it deepens quickly, don't be put off by the shallow
water, if you are looking for good Roach fishing and you are a competent
stick float angler then this is certainly one of the best fisheries in
May and June. Remember the river here has a stony bottom and will cause
the feeder men problems..
Methods.
If you are fishing here at spawning time, ie. May to the beginning
of June, then you will have to keep the loose feed going over the top
of your initial ground baiting, after your initial baiting, little and
often is the order of the day.
Baits.
Red Maggots, Caster etc.
As always, we ask that you take all of your litter away with you, consider
the environment and the angler who will fish after you!
