2006/2007 Heat Results

Heat 1 - 25th April, River Inny at Float Bridge
84 anglers turned upto fish the first qualifying competition of the 2006/07 Kingspan National Pike Championships on the River Inny.

The river was in near perfect conditions. The only problem was that most anglers didn't bring any sun protection cream. It really was like beautiful summer's day. Those that walked miles of bank in chest waders really suffered.

Under such conditions you would be expecting pretty poor catches. Not so !!!!. Over 200 pike, including 8 doubles to 20lbs, were caught and released. T

We didn't actually end up fishing St Johns Lake but fished a lake beside it. Conditions were really terrible with gale force winds and heavy driving rain. Kingspan Final - Result and Report
The Final was fished on 31st March, 2007 on a large lake in Roscommon. The lake had lots of lovely pikey features. However many of the pike had just spawned and others were just about to. This, combined with flat calm sunny conditions, resulted in only 43 pike being caught by the 56 anglers.

The top 5 anglers from each of 10 independent qualifying matches could attend. There were also 5 from the stewards qualifier and one other angler who got through after a "stewards enquiry".

Fishing was very slow from the start and it became clear from an early stage that small weights would do well so every fish was going to be important. Lots of really good anglers didnt see a pike all day long never mind getting a tap from one.

Below is a list of the top 10 anglers who will make up the team to travel to England in October to fish against the British team. Well Done to our new Kingspan National Pike Champion John Woods from Belfast.

1st John Woods (Belfast) 3 pike 11-02
2nd Paddy Daly (Cootehill) 1 pike 10-11
3rd Michael McKinney (Longford) 1 pike 8-05
4th Pat Behan (Dublin) 1 pike 7-04
5th David Young (Longford) 4 pike 6-07
6th Fred Mooney (Drogheda) 1 pike 6-07
7th Gerry Keenan (Duleek) 6 pike 6-05
8th Thomas Sheridan (Loch Gowna) 1 pike 6-02
9th Joe Coleman (Duleek) 3 pike 4-12
10th John Chambers (Dublin) 1 pike 4-12
