Location
Take
the Kilglass road out of Roosky, after a few miles you will see the superb
panoramic view of Kilglass on your right. About one mile beyond Kilglass
church turn right at the sign post indicating Kilglass Lake, there is
excellent parking at the bottom of this very steep hill, don't turn onto
the farm track which is halfway down the hill, keep right on to the car
park at the bottom.
Overview
Built out from the car park is a jetty which is there for the
mooring of cruisers, five well constructed platforms have been erected
for the use of anglers one of which is just a few yards to the left of
the moorings, this platform is definitely a no no! a reed bed extends
out from the left side and the cruisers turn around just in front of it,
there is very little depth of water.. If you walk through the field to
the left of the car park you will find a platform built to the left of
the previously mentioned reed bed which, by the way, splits that part
of the lake in two. Although built to accommodate two anglers it really
is suitable for only one, the reeds make it impossible for the right hand
side to be fished, position yourself on the left and fish diagonally out
towards the center of the lake, there is approximately ten feet of water
at twenty yards and the further you cast the deeper it gets.. Bream and
Tench inhabit this area, limit yourself to the feeder because of the fluctuations
in depth.
There are three platforms to the right of the car park, the first one
suffers because of its close proximity to the mooring, if there is no
cruiser tied up it will accommodate two anglers, you will find twelve
feet plus within easy casting range, Roach are the main species here but
there is always the chance of a couple of good Bream. The second platform
is a much better prospect, it doesn't suffer from the infringement
of the reeds or cruisers, you will find around eighteen feet of water
here with very little under tow, fishing close to the platform produces
quality Roach and Hybrids, the Bream, which are big here, are caught on
the inside line and are normally located just beyond the drop off which
is about fifteen yards out. A very large shoal of Bream inhabit the area
between the second and third platforms which are considerably further
up the lake, if all the platforms had been erected in this area then we
would have had fewer disappointed anglers.
The third, and last, platform is in a prime area, the depth here is over
twenty eight feet! Don't let this put you off, I have had big catches
here on the slider, you will catch on the feeder but to me, being an out
and out float man, that's the method to use!
Note that this is not a spawning area therefore early season is very much
hit and miss, late June through October are the best times
Methods
Waggler or Feeder, take your pick!
Baits
All of the usual baits work well, ring the changes
Summary
