Introduction

For those anglers visiting Lanesboro for the first time here is a brief description of the venue. The river is divided into two by a reed bed down the center, on the West side is the seven to eight foot deep boat channel, on the East bank is the hot water stretch which has been specifically developed. There are approximately forty very tight pegs on the concrete embankment, twenty above and twenty below the bridge. This straight stretch is only thirty feet wide and only three to four feet deep, the flow is fairly fast and can vary dependant on the amount of hot water being pumped from the power station outfall.

Methods

Most anglers opt for the feeder fished tight up to the reed bed with normal feeder rod or a long pole both can be very productive. If you are a competent stick float angler then try the method I always use and you may well put a lot more fish in your keep net.

Set Up

Fourteen foot stick float rod, closed face reel loaded with 2˝lb line which I fish straight through, a modified, wire stemmed, stick or avon float and a fine wire micro barbed size 14 hook. Set the float to six inches over depth, the method is to cast, hold back, then run forward about three feet and hold back hard repeat all the way down your swim, bites usually come on the hold back.

Feeding

I always use Irish Angling Services brown crumb ground bait, it mixes well to any consistency, at Lanesboro a very firm mix is the order of the day for, not only are you using the ground bait as a carrier, but you need to get to the bottom fast! If you do not the angler below you will have all of your fish..

For a days fishing you will need:
Two pints casters
Two pints red maggots
One pint hemp
Small tin sweet corn
Worms…...

Lace the ground bait with casters, reds, hemp and a few grains of corn. Make three or four large balls put them in two yards below your rod tip. Ring the changes with your hook bait until you find the bait the fish prefer, once the fish start coming keep the ground bait going in with at least one good ball every ten minutes or so.

Warning… Big pike reside here!!!!
