Location

Situated on the main N4 midway between Longford and Carrick on Shannon.

Overview

Roosky is, without question, the most popular angling venue along the entire length of the upper Shannon region, Roosky village, although the river runs through its midst, has very little space for bank fishing, in fact there are more facilities for the cruising fraternity, we all hope that, at some point in the future, this problem will be addressed by the appropriate authorities. One possible option is to open the bank below the dry dock, this could accommodate at least twenty anglers, it would require some sort of access road and flat hardcore pegs in order that those less mobile than ourselves can get access to the fishing, (Gloucester Disabled Anglers, we acknowledge your plea!)
We appreciate all of the problems involved with landowners etc but the additional access to good fishing would be a tremendous asset to angling tourism in Roosky.
Directly across the road from 'Franks Garage' on the N4 is a stretch of bank that can accommodate about ten anglers, courtesy of Peter Reynolds, who owns the land.

Methods

The Shannon at Roosky is wide yet only has an average depth of seven to eight feet, even in the middle, with a good, clean gravel bottom and a slow to medium pace, it is perfect for putting a stick float down at rods length or a waggler out as far as you want, the odd ball of ground bait and regular loose feeding will keep quality Roach interested. There are very good Bream in the river which you are more likely to catch during early morning or late evening sessions, from as far back as I can remember, even before the influx of Roach to the system, the Bream, from the end of April until the end of October, swim down river from Pidgeon Island every evening to spend the night in the area between the bridge and the lock, they then return upstream in the early morning. If you stand on Roosky Bridge on a warm, calm evening you will be amazed at the numbers of rising fish.
There is one other spot that you can fish, down at the island, by the lock, you can drive your car down to the lock, turn into the car park opposite the Weir Lodge and follow the small road all the way down to the parking area. Walk across the lock gates, then over a small bridge to the main island, providing the river is not in flood you will find two good pegs directly below the sluices, there are three pegs at the back of the island but the water is eddying back towards the sluices, and is only two feet deep, you will be better off going around the corner where the river deepens as it enters the boat channel.
The Lock Keeper here is Tony, an extremely nice man with a wry sense of humour, pass the time of day with him..

Hook Baits

Red Maggots, Casters, Sweet Corn or Worms etc
